Chilean Community in Canada Declare Obama, Visit Non Grata

Vancouver, March 16, 2011

Dear Sr.

Sebastian Piñera Echeñique, President of the Republic of Chile

Alfredo Moreno Charme, Minister of External Affair

Ricardo Plazza Ducó, General Consul Of Chile in Vancouver, Canada

The Chilean, Canadian and Latin-American community in Vancouver, Canada. We call your attention, and the attention of the international community to express our repudiation of the presence of the visit of the president of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama, is not good news for Chile or for Latin America. His presence cannot be welcome.

The triumph of Barack Obama represented a hope of change for the people of the United States of North America and it also lodged expectations in Latin America on a possible modification of the Empire policies towards the region. Unfortunately, none of those expectations or any change on the Imperial policy in the region and the world have been fulfilled. The economic, financial, military and industrial power prevails as the unique logic in the imperial war-making policy, in its military occupation, as it is expressed in Iraq and Afghanistan and on the EE.UU. Support to dictatorial regimes like deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarack and to the Israeli government in its systematic aggression of the Palestinian people.

We the undersigned make the United States imperialism responsible and we reiterate that:

1.- The United States government have responsibility in the murder of two Presidents of Chile, Salvador Allende and Eduardo Frei, one assassinated in the bombings of the Government Palace (La Moneda) and the other murdered and poisoned in a clinic of the high bourgeoisie in Santiago of Chile.

2.- We make the government of the EE.UU responsible of having had participation in all the crimes and tortures in Chile, in the cases of disappearances of political, social and union opponents.

3.- We make the government of the EE.UU. responsible for supporting the dictatorship in Chile and other countries in Latin America.

4.- We make the government of the EE.UU. responsible of being part of the Terrorist Operation Condor.

5.- We denounce the government of Obama for its determination to isolate and destabilize the governments of Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua, and for its continued attempts at pushing back the progressive forces in Brazil, Argentina and other nations of the continent.

    No torture ship in BC

    Press Release
Would you invite a rapist to your home?
The Victoria Harbour Authority and the Canadian Navy have

Victoria, June 15, 2011: The No Torture Ship in BC, a coalition of labour, human right organizations and activists, is asking the Victoria Harbour Authoriy and the Canadian Navy to withdraw the invitation to the Chilean torture ship Esmeralda to visit Victoria.

Scheduled to dock in Victoria August 1- 5, this vessel served as a floating torture chamber during the dictatorship of Chile’s Augusto Pinochet. Women were raped; men were beaten and tortured to death, such as the case of British-Chilean priest Father Michael Woodward whose body was made disappeared by the Chilean Navy after being tortured aboard La Esmeralda.

Mrs. Patricia Bennetts, Father Woodward’s sister, has written to the Victoria Harbour Authority, local business organizations, Admiral Greenwood and the Victoria City Council “ I would be grateful if a socially minded nation, conscious of protecting human rights violations wherever they occur, would rescind its invitation for a torture ship to visit ports in British Columbia. As did the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Spain on the ESMERALDA’s last European tour in 2008”, concluded Mrs. Bennetts in her letter to the Canadian authorities.

Local efforts will include contacting 8 cruise ship companies, local merchants, business organizations, churches and civic authorities informing them of the detrimental economic effects that such proposed visit will have when massive protest against this ship develop in the Inner Harbour.

The No Torture Ship in BC is endorsed by CUPE Local 50 City Workers, Victoria Central America Support Committee, Committee for the Survivors of Torture
